What are energetic boundaries?

We experience energetic boundaries when someone stands too close to us. We naturally lean back or step away. Unaware of this energetic interaction, the other person may move in close again, and then the same leaning-stepping dance begins anew. Feeling someone’s eyes on you and turning to see a person looking at you, or sensing the deer on the road ahead, before you even get there. We are responding to energetic fields.
Our energetic field, or biofield, is constantly receiving and sending information to the many energy fields around us – people, places, things, plants, animals, the earth, the cosmos. We are affecting and being affected by the energy fields around us. Throughout history and across cultures shaman, healers and other wisdom keepers have long recognized and worked with the important level of information that energy fields carry.
This electromagnetic field, sometimes described
as a matrix of light, acts like an energetic sheath surrounding the body. This field both takes in energy and information and emits energy and information. In this way it has the ability to inform us, protect us, and interact with the energies around us. Researchers in the biofield sciences use devices such as Medical Thermal Imaging, Kirlian Photography and Electro Photonic Imaging (EPI) to measure and study these energy emanations.[1]

Current research exploring the anatomy and physiology of the human biofield is finding correlations between damage to the physical or emotional system and a corresponding weakness in the biofield. Research shows that disturbances or imbalances in the energetic field actually precede physical expression of imbalances in the body.[2]
Our energetic field is like our personal radar system. It provides protection and filtering so that we can keep our own energy intact, vibrant and healthy no matter what is going on around us. It also serves to magnetize information, guidance, people, events, relationships, and bring them into our experience.
Our energetic boundaries can be influenced, for better or worse, by parents, relatives, friends, school, religious organizations, bosses, coworkers, the news, events in our life, and more. Our energetic boundaries are dynamic and mutable. They can be strong and resilient under most circumstances but weakened in a particular situation or around a specific person.
Impactful life events and trauma can also be reflected in the state of our energy field. Unhealed memories or wounds can breach our energetic boundaries from the inside. The unresolved emotional energy resides in our information field – our energetic sphere – influencing the whole and weakening it. It becomes like a filter through which our information passes, which in turn influences our thoughts and feelings – from the perspective of the unhealed wound.
So, working from the inside out, doing our individual work to heal and clear old emotional wounds, is paramount for maintaining strong, vibrant energetic boundaries. Otherwise we will find that we continue to attract experiences that mirror the feeling of the original wound. An unhealed wound is like an active bandwidth in your broadcast system, and at the quantum level, what we put out comes back with a matching energy or feeling state. If we have unresolved anger issues we will experience other people’s anger in varying forms until we resolve the imbalance. Once an issue, such as anger, is resolved our experiences and information are no longer filtered through the old lens of anger, which has been attracting similar energies and coloring how we see our self and the world around us.
The human body is made up of many amazing systems – the nervous system, circulatory system, skeletal and muscular system to name a few. Our electromagnetic field, is a complex and layered system all its own. Ongoing research and discoveries in biology, quantum physics and psychology are pointing to the fundamental nature of our electromagnetic energy system as a matrix that provides the template for the body [3] and is a barometer of mental, emotional and physical health.
A compromised or weakened energy system may present as feeling unsafe in the world, disempowered, the inability to assert your self or advocate for your own needs, show as illness, or you may feel distanced from joy, compassion and love. When we have strong boundaries we feel grounded, energized, safe, healthy and have a strong sense of self-trust. We feel empowered and trust our ability to navigate in the world successfully.

What does this mean to us in our every day life? It means we can detect imbalances in our body before it becomes disease and we can heal emotional wounds and address issues that sabotage our ability to create and experience the things we value in life. It means that we can feel safe in the world and speak our truth in an aligned and respectful way, and feel the power of our own focused creative self-expression, every day.
